New design

Revolution Theme
This weekend I’ve implemented an entirely new design that gives the site more of a ‘newspaper’ feel. It took a fair amount of hacking about and de-selection of certain plug-ins to get it working more or less right. The one thing that isn’t displaying correctly are Kyte.tv videos. That’s a pain in the butt but I’m working on it.

On the left hand side you’ll find an extract of the latest story. Beneath that is a way to obtain email subscriptions followed by a list of the most recent stories.

In the mid-section you’ll find a selection of the latest stories from among the categories listed along the top navigation bar but organized the way I think most people will be interested.

To the right are the sponsor and ad sections along with recent comments, other standing information plus a new widget, courtesy of Jeff Nolan that lists a selection of stories from the Enterprise Irregulars. Nice one Jeff.

The one downside is that I’ve had to prune the categories – hard. That means I’ve combined some categories and eliminated others altogether. Readers can still search stories but the ‘General’ section now contains a huge number of otherwise non-categorized stories. This was a pragmatic design decision that forces me to be a lot more careful about both categorizing and tagging.

I hope you all like the new design. It’s been a combination of hard cash and a labour of love.

UPDATE: Fixed the kyte.tv problem

  • Much better! I clicked over to reach the Cubic Telecom story, and easily found my way around. Much improved. I like it! Hey-- user-generated design- not bad for an enerprisey old guy...!
  • First saw ref to your new layout through my bloglines rss reader so clicked the link to have a look. Got to this page: http://www.accmanpro.com/2007/09/30/new-design/ which meant I was confused by the ref to a l'h margin. Worked it out though. Nice one Dennis. Your blogging goes from strength to strength.
  • Like the new layout - looks clean and organised.
The left-hand column is a bit wide though - a wider centre column would be better.
  • I like it, Dennis.

I still get a javascript error about the 'quicktags10n' function though. This was present on the old design, so not something you've broken.

    This is on IE6.
  • Hi Dennis! Pretty slick the new interface to the Web site. I like it. I find it easier to navigate and find the stuff you have been sharing. A keeper, imo! Plus it doesn't make me feel as old as the former one used to ... Know why?

Oh, by the way, it would be nice if, at some point in time, you would bring back the comment preview, so that we would be able to check out what it looks like before posting. For the rest, way to go! And quite an inspiration!

    Colour scheme looks great.

I'd move the Latest Story, Asides and Recent Stories stuff on the left elsewhere since the eye naturally looks at that side for relevant new content. The middle column should be there instead since the short description below each headline is pretty useful in deciding whether you want to click through or not. Presently it looks a bit squished.

There should also be an indicator next to each headline denoting the number of reader comments since that tends to tally well with the usefulness of the news piece. The Recent Conversations entries could also do with time-stamping.

Don't know if it's possible but it would be nice to have a toggle to display headlines date-wise or subject-wise.
  • Nice design, Dennis. Like it.
  • @Richard: you must be due for a change. It wasn't that difficult once I understood how the templates fit together - just a bit of judicious code changing here and there plus a bit of fiddling with headings, categories and post numbers. All-in-all - an interesting experience.

Adding in graphics to the posts definitely helps to draw the eye methinks.

    I think it's great

I'm suffering template envy right now :-)

actually I quite like this. I tend to follow your missives through google reader, but perhaps this will alter my behaviour!
  • @Susan: Does adding in a graphic to the 'Latest Story' plus making it a full story read help? Seems so to me but then what do I know?
  • i liked the old one better, dennis! not sure exactly why... this one gives me too many options and not a clear focal point for my reader's eye.
  • Nice redesign Dennis. Good layout and I like the color palette. I think the simplified sidebar is a welcome trend btw.
  • Hard to believe ...
  • Be harsh - no worries.

Yeah - it does a bit but it's the cleanest design I've found that does what I want and in any event I am an ex-corporate type so...
  • Being subtle might have been funny but explaining will seem harsh. Just looked a little shiny corporate.
  • Why do you say that or have I missed The Obvious?

Actually - all done in WP with Brian Gardner's Revolution News theme.
  • Did you make it with Sharepoint?

    ;-)
